How to Ace FCPS Part 1 Otorhinolaryngology (ENT)

A focused, no-nonsense preparation strategy for Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) candidates. Built from candidate experience and the real CPSP exam pattern.

The Core Strategy

1. Master Paper 1 before specialty deep-dive

Paper 1 is common basic sciences and is the same for almost every FCPS specialty. Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, and Behavioural Sciences combined make up 100 MCQs. Many ENT candidates underestimate Paper 1 because they are focused on their specialty content. Reverse this. Build a rock-solid Paper 1 foundation first, then layer specialty content on top.

2. Choose a topic-wise approach for Paper 2

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Paper 2 has predictable topics. Pick one topic at a time and work through it completely (reading and MCQs together) before moving to the next. Random jumping wastes weeks. A disciplined sequence is faster and retention is stronger.

3. Practice MCQs from day one

Active recall beats passive reading. Solve MCQs while you read each topic, not after finishing the entire syllabus. MedMasters' ENT bank allows subject-wise practice from the first day of preparation.

4. Use recall-based past papers heavily

CPSP repeats MCQs across sittings. Drilling recall papers gives you familiarity with question patterns and frequently tested topics. Treat past paper MCQs as the most important resource in the final 4 to 6 weeks.

5. Don't ignore weak subjects

Most failures in FCPS Part 1 come from one or two badly prepared subjects pulling down the overall percentage. Track your accuracy per subject. Aim for at least 70% in every subject before moving into final revision.

6. Mock exams in the last 3 to 4 weeks

Take timed mock exams with 100 MCQs in 2½ hours. This trains pace and exposes time-management gaps. Don't skip this step. Real exam stamina is built through practice, not theory.

7. Stay calm and consistent

Consistency over 3 to 6 months always beats panic studying for 3 to 6 weeks. Build a daily routine, track progress, and trust the process.

Suggested Study Plan

A reasonable timeline assuming 3 to 4 months of dedicated preparation. Adjust based on your starting point and daily hours.

Weeks 1–4: Foundation

Cover Paper 1 basic sciences subject by subject. Anatomy and Physiology first, then Pathology and Pharmacology, then Microbiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Behavioural Sciences. Practice MCQs daily on the subject being studied.

Weeks 5–10: Specialty Deep-Dive

Move into ENT Paper 2 topic by topic. Allocate 1 to 2 weeks per major topic area. Combine textbook reading with MedMasters' Paper 2 MCQs for that topic. Keep doing 30 to 50 Paper 1 MCQs daily to maintain retention.

Weeks 11–14: Past Papers and Revision

Switch focus to recall-based past papers and full subject revisions. Identify weak areas using your accuracy dashboard. Target weak subjects with focused revision.

Weeks 15–16: Mock Exams and Final Revision

Two to three full mock exams under timed conditions. Quick high-yield revision of all subjects. Avoid learning new topics in the final week. Sleep, hydration, and exam-day logistics matter as much as study at this point.
